Project Updates – May 2016

May 18, 2016

We’ve been in touch with our projects to find out what they’ve been up to – from snowboarding to street play – quite a lot it seems!

G15 Youth Project

G15 Youth Project in Drumchapel, Glasgow wanted to give the young people in their area a chance to experience a new activity and learn skills they never imagined they would achieve – so they organised a snowboarding course! The young people learned the basics over 6 weeks in January on the dry slope at nearby Bearsden Ski Club.  By the end of the 6 weeks, they had completed Levels 1 and 2 and even Level 3 on the snowboarding achievement scale. Their reward?  A day out putting what they learned into practice on real snow on the slopes of the Glencoe Mountain Resort in Argyll.  A fantastic day out was had by all and one young person said, by the end of it, he was ‘sore, tired and happy’.  G15 youth leaders said the experience highlights the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things. Winter Olympians in the making?  Watch this space!

Some great news to report from our friends at Nik Muffins! Founder member Tinyiko Mareane graduated from the University of Johannesburg with a degree in Economics and Econometrics.  Nik Muffins have employed 3 university students , all Nik Muffins resellers from the Johannesburg area.  And a few of the Nik Muffins girls who were in matric last year are now enrolled in different universities and colleges in Johannesburg – well done for your great work, Nik Muffins! Here’s what some of their girls had to say about being part of Nik Muffins Girls Club:

'It has been an incredible journey being with this group, we had our ups and downs, but we always manage to put everything together to make it work. Being part of Nik Muffins has shown me inspiration and fearlessness. Living up to our slogan 'owning our future' is one of the positive impacts I carry in my life now.'

'Being part of Nik Muffins is like a dream come true. Ever since I've been a part of Nik Muffins, I've become a better person who know how to live life to make sure my future is the best.'

The PEEK Project team have been as busy as ever!  They recently recorded a record high of 150 children in a single day of Street Play across all their sites in Glasgow and, with 4 brand new street play sites being introduced across the East and North of Glasgow, they are looking forward to reaching more and more children.

PEEK have been working in partnership with Community Safety Glasgow and Catch The Light to carry out an action research project based around knife crime in the Calton area as part of the Scottish Government’s ‘No Knives, Better Lives programme’.  Congratulations to PEEK’s young people who delivered their findings to over 100 people at Hampden stadium, Scotland’s national stadium, and received a Level 5 Democracy award.

PEEK’s Shine! Groups have been working to explore different ways of creating visual art, learning new techniques and taking inspiration from artists such as Wassily Kandinsky.  The Shine artists showcased their work in their very own exhibition, giving their families, friends and community the chance to see their amazing work.  We look forward to seeing Shine! artists exhibiting in national galleries in the future!
